Go green! It's so much easier to do than you might think. Go green is a movement that's been getting exponentially popular as more and more people are realizing the importance of being environmentally responsible.

You can go green by doing something as simple as turning out the light when you leave a room, or by bringing your own reusable shopping bags to the grocery store. More easy ways to go green:

  • Install compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs. They use much less energy and last longer than regular bulbs.
  • Unplug electronic devices when you're not using them. Many electronics like TVs and cell phone chargers use power even when they're not being used. Any electronic device with a clock or indicator light uses energy all the time.
  • Buy locally grown food. By doing this, you're getting extremely fresh food that didn't travel hundreds or thousands of miles to get to you. If also reduces the emissions from trucks that would be used to transport produce across country.
  • Only use the dishwasher and washing machine when you have a full load. Doing this will save water and energy.
  • Install a digital, programmable thermostat. You can program these so that energy isn't wasted when you're at work or away from home for long periods of time.
  • When it's time to get new appliances, buy Energy Star rated appliances. These appliances use less energy than non-rated models.

These are some small changes that can add up to make a big difference. Some other changes that you can make involve long term commitments.

  • Replace old windows with new ones that cut down on the heat lost in the winter and cool lost in the summer. Newer windows can drastically reduce your heating and cooling cost - saving you money and saving the earth.
  • Replace your conventional water heater with an energy efficient one that only heats the water that you need, instead of having a huge tank filled with hot water. Not only will you  have all of the hot water you could need, you will also save energy costs and space.
  • Carpooling is a great idea - not only will your commute be more pleasant, you will reduce emissions. Traffic doesn't seem as bad when you have some one to talk to or even commiserate with.
  • Adding solar panels to your roof will cut your electic bill. With super hot summers in the south and really cold winters in the north, all the savings you can get on electric is welcome.
